Sleep pillows

Made from pure natural materials

With natural pillows, there are two variants: fill pillows and shape pillows. With the fill pillow, you are in control yourself. Using Swiss stone pine shavings or natural latex flakes, the filling can be adjusted so that you lie not only comfortably but also ergonomically correctly. Too high, too flat, too firm? Then it is simply readjusted. Shape pillows made of natural latex give way exactly where the head sinks in, while the neck is simultaneously supported. This ensures that the head is not bent, the spine remains straighter, and the muscles can relax.

FAQ & Tips

Production in the in-house manufactory

Our dormiente natural material pillows are lovingly handcrafted in the company’s own manufactory in Heuchelheim, central Hesse. For over 38 years, dormiente has been producing 100% natural sleeping pillows made from valuable natural fibers, such as natural latex and Swiss stone pine shavings, according to strict sustainability and high quality standards, so that you can sleep healthily.

We distinguish two types of pillows: the fill pillow and the shape pillow

Whether fill pillow or shape pillow is often a matter of personal need and preference. However, choosing the right pillow is a crucial point for healthy sleep and is often underestimated. In addition to the orthopedic aspects of correct cervical spine alignment, factors such as coziness or climate regulation also come into play. From an orthopedic perspective, a pillow should support the head and represent the cervical spine in as natural a form as possible. However, since the neck area is a rather small, limited area, proper positioning of the head is often difficult and personal preferences are often counterproductive (e.g., “my head should lie high”). Furthermore, it is important to determine your actual sleeping position. Morning tension in the neck and shoulder area can be an indication of incorrect head positioning caused by an unsuitable pillow.

Natural fill pillows

Fill pillows have the great advantage that the filling material, e.g., latex flakes or Swiss stone pine flakes, can be individually adjusted to your personal needs by removing filling material until the correct amount is well distributed and optimally supports your head.

Shape pillows

Natural shape pillows are neck pillows made from a single mold and can hardly be changed. They should therefore fit well from the start if you want to buy a pillow. In principle, these neck pillows should be made from very elastic material, e.g., 100% natural latex, like the dormiente shape pillows. Less elastic sleeping pillows, e.g., made of cold foam, are not suitable.

FAQ Sleep Pillows Made from Natural Materials

You are looking for a new pillow – maybe because your old one is worn out, your neck hurts in the morning, or you simply no longer want synthetic fillings. Understandable! But which sleep pillow is the right one? What fillings are available? And how do you properly care for your pillow? In our FAQ section, we have collected all the answers about sleep pillows for you.

What are the benefits of sleep pillows made from natural materials?

There are things that are simply more enjoyable when the pillow is right – for example an impromptu pillow fight or cozy cuddling after a long day. Natural pillows take the top spot here – because they are simply filled with advantages 😉.

✅ Natural sleep pillows are breathable & temperature regulating

Never wake up soaked in sweat or shivering in winter again – it’s possible... with natural pillows! Unlike synthetic pillows, they naturally keep the sleeping climate balanced. Synthetic pillows shift the responsibility for climate regulation onto the body – which then has to work at night instead of recovering.

Natural pillows take care of this job for you. Reliably. Because every natural material – from hemp to cotton, kapok, wool, or natural latex – has its own superpower. Plant fibers absorb moisture and gradually release it again, preventing the pillow from becoming damp. Sheep’s wool can store up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet, keeping the pillow dry. Natural latex prevents heat build-up thanks to its open-cell structure and allows air to circulate freely.

✅ Natural pillows contain no chemical load

Natural sleep pillows contain no plasticizers, no plastics, and no hidden harmful substances. But the list goes further: they also contain no solvents and no artificial flame retardants.

✅ Natural materials are better for the environment

Synthetic pillows are usually made of polyester – i.e. petroleum – a resource that is neither sustainable nor biodegradable. Natural pillows rely on renewable raw materials from sustainable cultivation that are produced in a more environmentally friendly way. And the best part: many natural fillings such as kapok, wool, or hemp are durable and can be composted or recycled after use. The motto of natural pillows: less waste and less (micro)plastic.

✅ Natural sleep pillows adapt to you

Too high? Too flat? No problem. Adjustable pillows like the Ergopillo from dormiente have a zipper so you can adjust the filling to your preference. This allows you to tailor the pillow exactly to your sleeping position, whether you prefer sleeping on your back, side, or stomach. If the pillow loses volume over time, you don’t need to replace it – simply refill the filling material. Done!

Shaped pillows, on the other hand, are made of 100% natural latex – this material gently and individually adapts to the shape of the head and neck.

Sleep pillows & neck support pillows: what should you consider when buying?

A pillow is not just for cuddling – it should ensure that head, neck, and back can fully relax AND remain orthopedically correct. This is especially important for spinal health. Here are the key points:

Height & sleeping position: The right pillow height depends on whether you sleep on your stomach, side, or back. You can read more about what to consider in this blog article.

Optimal neck support: Your pillow should relieve the neck, not strain it. You can learn which pillow best supports the neck and helps with neck pain here.

Shoulder relief: Your pillow should not only support the head but also consider the shoulder area. Especially for side sleepers, it is important not to neglect the shoulders when choosing a pillow.

Back-friendly: An ergonomic pillow (only in combination with an orthopedic mattress) ensures that your spine remains in a straight line – from the cervical spine to the lower back area. Otherwise, the body compensates for poor sleeping posture, which can lead to pain.

What fillings are available for dormiente sleep pillows?

It is worth carefully choosing what material you rest your head on night after night – after all, a good pillow makes the difference between “waking up relaxed” and “starting the day with neck pain.” dormiente products therefore use only natural materials: natural latex, sheep’s wool, Swiss stone pine flakes, and hemp.

What inner and outer covers are available for dormiente sleep pillows?

The cover is what your face comes into contact with every night. So it must be soft and must not scratch. dormiente therefore uses natural, breathable materials. The outer cover is a soft hemp knit made from hemp, organic cotton, and Tencel™. The inner cover is usually made of 100% organic cotton, known for its skin-friendliness and durability.

Are dormiente pillows vegan?

It depends on the filling! Many of our dormiente sleep pillows are vegan because they contain no animal materials – but some models do include sheep’s wool. Simply look for the “Vegan” label in the product description.

🌿 Vegan natural pillows:

These sleep pillows contain only plant-based materials such as kapok, natural latex, Swiss stone pine shavings, organic cotton (GOTS certified), hemp, or Tencel™.

🐑 Non-vegan natural pillows:

If sheep’s wool is used, the pillow is of course not vegan. Sheep’s wool offers excellent natural temperature and moisture regulation, but it is an animal product.

How do you properly care for a sleep pillow?

A natural pillow is easy to care for if you follow a few simple rules. It is best to fluff it regularly to keep the filling airy. Air the pillow occasionally outdoors. The cover can be washed normally.

At a glance:

Fluff pillows regularly – keeps the filling airy and prevents clumping.

Air pillows instead of washing – fresh air is usually enough for most natural fillings.

Wash the cover – cotton or hemp is durable and machine washable.

How sustainable are sleep pillows made from natural materials?

Short answer: Very! And for these reasons:

Renewable raw materials: Natural pillows are made from materials such as kapok, natural latex, or hemp. These are renewable resources that do not consume finite resources like petroleum (unlike synthetic pillows made from polyester or memory foam).

Lower energy consumption in production: The production of natural latex, cotton, or hemp requires less energy and water than synthetic pillows. Memory foam, for example, is produced under high pressure and extreme heat, consuming large amounts of resources and releasing pollutants.

Biodegradable: A polyester pillow ends up in landfill or is incinerated, releasing pollutants and CO₂. Natural pillows are biodegradable or compostable at the end of their life.

Less microplastic in water: Synthetic fibers release tiny plastic particles during washing, which can enter the environment and water systems.

Are dormiente sleep pillows suitable for allergy sufferers?

Yes, dormiente sleep pillows are hypoallergenic and ideal for allergy sufferers. While synthetic pillows trap moisture and create a mite-friendly environment, natural latex and hemp provide a dry, breathable climate. They are naturally resistant to dust mites. In addition, mold cannot develop in this dry environment due to lack of nutrients. Here we have summarized the most important information on bedding for allergy sufferers.

When should a natural pillow be replaced?

A natural pillow should be replaced every 2 to 4 years. If the pillow no longer provides proper support, feels damp, or develops an unpleasant smell, it is time for a replacement.

What pillow sizes does dormiente offer?

dormiente offers pillows in sizes 40 x 60 cm and 40 x 80 cm. These sizes are recommended by orthopedic specialists and physiotherapists because they provide optimal support for the head and neck without positioning the body too high.

How much does a natural pillow cost?

Prices are available directly from a dormiente specialist retailer. If you do not know where the nearest dormiente retailer is located, you can find out here.
